Dry fur is a problem that may appear but can be corrected. It can be caused by allergies and other health problems, but it is also often caused by incorrect grooming practices.

One of the factors that can cause dry skin is shampoo, both in terms of the type of shampoo used and in terms of washing the soap out of the fur after bathing.

Dogs of the breed may suffer sensitivity to chemicals, so it is recommended to use a hypoallergenic shampoo and then a suitable conditioner. It should be strong enough to wash the dirt off the dog but gentle enough not to cause irritation.

You should use a sufficient amount of shampoo, which will create a good lather, but then make sure to wash the Akita well to remove all the lather. Two buckets of water are not enough, and you should definitely use a hose or a hand shower that allows the water to reach the skin. In any case, it is important to wash the Akita for at least another 2 minutes, even when you think it is already washed. Any substance left on the skin will become a layer that will cause dry and itchy skin.

There are many causes of dry patches of skin. Starting with hormonal imbalance and ending with worms and more than 20 other medical factors. Therefore, in case of noticeable shedding, it is important to take the dog to the vet. Many cases result from simple dry skin, as a result of which the dog begins to chew the skin and worsens the problem, the breed is also prone to hereditary problems in the immune system, so it is important to check the situation to determine the cause.

If it is a problem of dryness, adding omega 3 to food can greatly improve the situation. It will also help the fur to become soft and supple (within 3-4 weeks).

The Akita is born in a variety of colors, although the color most associated with the breed is a sort of bright orange. Colors include red-brown, sesame (red hair with black tips), spotted and white. All the above colors except white must be "orjiro". (Orjiro - whitish fur on the sides of the muzzle, cheeks, lower part of the jaw, neck, chest, body and tail, and on the inside of the legs.)

The Akita has a double coat, like many other breeds. This is a woolly undercoat that is designed to insulate the dog from the climatic conditions (both heat and cold), and a stiffer upper coat that protects his skin from injury and rain.

Double-coated dogs shed their hair, especially the undercoat, twice a year for about two weeks. When the dog lives in an area that has extreme differences between the seasons, the shedding tends to be more severe than in places where there is not much difference from season to season.

It should be noted that puppies can have longer fur, which is then replaced by mature fur of the required length. The breed standard does not specify a desired length, but it is about a length of 2.5 to 5 cm more or less.

Akitas should never be shaved. Some people think - inadvertently - that this will help the dog catch a cold on hot days, but this is absolutely not true. The dog cools itself by moistening and sweating from the feet. Shaving will not help and may only expose the dog to the elements because the fur insulates and protects from both cold and heat.

Shaving in an attempt to deal with shedding is simply a mistake. In shaving, the top layer of fur is removed, but it is actually the bottom layer that falls out. Hence, it simply destroys the fur. In addition, the skin will be too exposed and may suffer from sunburn.
