The Akita is a healthy breed in general, there are certain medical problems and diseases that can be easily prevented by buying a puppy from a responsible breeder, who monitors and performs the relevant tests before littering purebred Akita Inu puppies.
Remember! Purebred Akita Inu - has certificates from the Israeli Kennel Association only. There is no such thing as an Akita Inu, the parents have certificates but the puppy has no certificates.
In our kennel! We place special emphasis on all medical aspects. The veterinarian of the kennel - Dr. Yoram Kleinberg, knows the Akita Inu breed closely. and accompanies us in every step related to the breeding of the dogs and their health monitoring.
Please be careful - when you buy an Akita Inu puppy do the necessary tests in order to avoid depression later on.

Hip dysplasia
Hereditary disease in which the femur does not sit well in the pelvic joint.
In some dogs, the problem manifests itself in pain and lameness in one or both hind legs, while others show no signs of discomfort at all. The only way to diagnose hip dysplasia is through an x-ray and then interpretation by an expert veterinarian. In any case, dogs that suffer from the phenomenon may develop arthritis at an advanced age.
Dogs suffering from severe hip dysplasia must not be spayed, therefore when buying a puppy you should ask the breeder to show the results of pelvic x-rays of the parents and make sure they are not diagnosed with the disease.

gastric inversion
A condition that may lead to death that affects large dogs with a deep chest, such as the Akita. Dogs that eat one large meal a day are even more exposed to the phenomenon, especially if they gobble quickly, drink a large amount of water after the meal and engage in vigorous physical activity later. In a gastric inversion situation, the dog's stomach fills with gas or air and rotates around itself. The dog is unable to expel air and food from the stomach to get rid of the excess air that is there and the normal blood flow to the heart is affected. The blood pressure drops and the dog goes into shock. If he does not receive immediate medical attention, the dog may die. If you see that the dog's stomach is swollen, that he is salivating non-stop and tries to vomit but nothing comes out. He may be suffering from an inversion of the stomach. He can also exhibit restlessness, depression, fatigue and weakness, along with a rapid pulse. It is important to bring the dog to the vet as soon as possible.

Hypothyroidism
May cause conditions such as epilepsy, alopecia (hair loss), obesity, fatigue, excess skin pigment and other skin problems. This condition can be treated with medication and a suitable diet.

Gradual degeneration of the retina
(PRA - progressive retinal atrophy) is a family of eye diseases that involve degeneration of the retina over time. At the beginning, the night vision of dogs suffering from the disease may be impaired, and they lose their vision even during the day as the disease progresses. Many dogs infected with the disease adapt well to a situation of limited vision or no vision as long as they live in an environment that does not change (furniture, stairs, etc.).

Skin gland disease
(SA – sebaceous adenitia). A known problem in the Akita breed. A congenital condition that is difficult to diagnose and often tends to be associated with the thyroid gland, allergy and other problems. A dog with SA suffers from inflammation of the sebaceous glands in the skin and this leads to the destruction of the glands over time. These are glands that produce an oily secretion that prevents the skin from drying out. Symptoms usually first appear in a one to five year old dog. In dogs suffering from the phenomenon, you see dry skin with scales and hair loss on the head, neck and back. Dogs that suffer from the disease in a severe form have thickened skin and a bad odor, along with secondary skin infections. Although the problem is essentially external, the dog suffers from discomfort. When SA is suspected, the vet performs a skin biopsy and can offer a variety of forms of treatment.
before making a decision
If you are debating whether an Akita Inu is suitable for your home, it is recommended to talk to a breeder who knows the breed in depth. A correct match between the dog and the family is just as important as external appearance or certificates.
