What is PRA disease?
Progressive retinal degeneration (PRA) is a family of genetic diseases that impair the vision of dogs, including Akita Inu dogs. This is a medical condition in which the retina, the part of the eye responsible for receiving light and transmitting visual information to the brain, gradually degenerates, leading to vision loss. This disease can affect a dog's quality of life, but with proper treatment and the right environment, dogs suffering from PRA can be provided with a full and happy life.
PRA is an inherited disease that causes degeneration of retinal cells over time. The degeneration process progresses gradually and causes vision loss, first at night and later also during the day. The disease is common in several breeds, including the Akita Inu, and is often inherited from the parents.
- Impaired night vision (Night Blindness): The first sign of PRA is difficulty seeing in low light conditions. The dog may seem hesitant or have trouble finding their way around at night.
- Gradual vision loss: As the disease progresses, daytime vision begins to deteriorate, until total vision loss.
- Dog adaptation: Many dogs with PRA develop an amazing ability to adapt to life with limited vision, especially if their environment remains constant.
PRA does not cause pain or discomfort to the dog, so identifying the disease can be challenging.
Signs and diagnosis
- Early symptoms: the dog hesitates in low light conditions. Sometimes you can notice changes in the eyes, such as increased reflection or a different color of the pupil.
- Professional diagnosis: An eye veterinarian can perform advanced tests, such as ERG (Electroretinography), to confirm the diagnosis. Genetic tests for parents in a quality breeding facility can reduce the risk of puppies that carry the disease gene.
Dogs with PRA can live good and happy lives, especially with a little help and support from their owners:
- Maintaining a stable environment: avoid significant changes in the location of furniture or the structure of the house. Make sure there are no obstacles such as scattered toys, open stairs or protruding furniture.
- Transport and security: use sound or smells (such as snacks) to guide the dog in unfamiliar places. Avoid scares or surprises that could cause unnecessary stress.
- Exercise and games: Blind dogs can still enjoy games like tug of war or using noisy toys. Excursions with a regular routine and familiar routes will help maintain their physical and mental health.
- Emotional support: PRA does not affect the dog's character. Continue to give him love, patience and attention as you always have.
